Basic Calculus and Physics. This course targets students who are enrolled in or have completed a bachelor in engineering.
Course Contents
Week 1: Introduction to Solar Energy
Week 2: Working Principle of a Semiconductor based Solar Cell
Week 3: Solar Cell Operation, Performance and Design Rules
Week 4: PV technology Based on Crystalline Silicon Wafers
Week 5: Thin-Film PV technologies
Week 6: Third Generation PV and Other Ways to Utilize Solar Energy
Week 7: PV Systems-Components and Concepts
Week 8: PV Systems- Application and Design
Study Goals
•The various methods of converting solar energy into electricity, heat and solar fuels
•The physical working principles of photovoltaic conversion in solar cells
•How to recognize and describe the various solar cell technologies, their current status and future technological challenges
•How to analyze the performance of solar cells and modules
•How to design a complete photovoltaic system for any particular application on paper

Self-paced MOOC, required study period: March-May 2018.
Note: 1 ECTS equals 28 hours
Literature and Study Materials
The book 'Solar Energy, basics, technology and systems' is free to download through the EdX site.
Three hour written exam, combination of open questions and multiple choice. The exam will be organized locally at your university and will be held at the same moment for all students from the participating universities.

In case one fails the first exam, a second opportunity is scheduled.

This course is open for a limited number of students from TU Delft and partner universities who are participating in the Credits for MOOCs project.
